Crowns

Dental Crowns are used when treating a tooth that has already had a substantial filling or may even be broken. The crown is matched to the same colour as the patients existing tooth and placed over it like a cap. The newer porcelain or ceramic crowns often give a more realistic and natural result by allowing light to transfer through the crown (translucency).

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are prosthetic devices designed to cover and protect a damaged or weakened tooth. They restore the tooth’s shape, size, and strength while improving its appearance. Crowns are typically made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination, and are custom-crafted to fit securely over the existing tooth. They are commonly used after a root canal, to support a large filling, or to enhance the aesthetics of a tooth.

What is the Process for Dental Crowns?

Step 1: Consultation

At your consultation we will assess your teeth and find out what you’d like to change about your smile. We’ll discuss the benefits of dental crowns and make sure that it’s the right treatment for you.

Step 2: First Appointment

To prepare your tooth for a crown, your dentist will trim some enamel to create space and ensure a secure fit. They may also use filling material to build up the tooth if needed. Next, impressions of your teeth will be taken, either physically or digitally, and sent to a dental lab to create your custom crown. While you wait for the permanent crown, which typically takes two to three weeks, a temporary crown made of resin or acrylic will be placed.

Step 3: Second Appointment

Once your new crown is ready and returned from the lab, you’ll visit your dentist for a second appointment. During this visit, your dentist will:

  • Remove the temporary crown
  • Assess the shape, colour, and fit of the new crown
  • Securely bond the new crown to your tooth with strong dental cement

Crowns Case Study

This patient was unhappy about his old porcelain fused to metal crowns which were too yellow. New whiter Zirconia crowns were placed to give a dazzling “Hollywood Smile”.
