There are two different fixed options to resolve tooth loss; Dental Bridgework or Dental Implants. Dental Bridgework uses dental crowns either side of the gap and a porcelain tooth fixed in the gap constructed so that it joins seamlessly onto the two crowns to give the appearance that the tooth (teeth) are not missing. This provides the patient with a life-like solution to tooth loss. It is often the ideal treatment if the teeth either side of the missing tooth (teeth) are heavily restored or already crowned.
Bridgework, or a dental bridge, is a prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of two or more crowns placed on the adjacent teeth (known as abutments) with an artificial tooth or teeth (pontics) anchored between them. This “bridge” restores the gap left by missing teeth, improving both function and appearance. Bridges can be made from materials like porcelain, metal, or a combination, and are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.
Professor Tipton has extensive experience of resolving tooth loss with various bridgework techniques, whether it be for one or more teeth and has written a series of articles for The Journal of Private Dentistry on the subject (available on request).

What is the Process for Bridgework?
Step 1: Consultation
Your dentist will assess your oral health and discuss your options for a dental bridge. This may include examining the condition of your adjacent teeth, taking X-rays, and planning the treatment.
Step 2: First Appointment
During the first visit, your adjacent teeth (abutments) are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to accommodate the crowns that will support the bridge. If necessary, additional treatments such as fillings or root canals may be performed.
Step 3: Impressions
Next, impressions of your teeth are taken, either through physical molds or digital scans, to create a custom bridge that fits perfectly. To protect the prepared teeth and maintain functionality while the permanent bridge is being crafted, a temporary bridge is placed.
Step 4: Final Appointment
During the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent bridge is carefully checked for fit, shape, and colour. Once everything is confirmed to be satisfactory, the permanent bridge is permanently cemented into place. Final adjustments are made to ensure the bridge is comfortable and functions properly.
A follow-up visit may be scheduled to ensure the bridge is fitting well and to address any issues. Regular check-ups will also be important to monitor the bridge and your overall oral health.
Bridgework Case Study
This lady was unhappy about her front bridge. She thought it looked too yellow, not natural and too short, giving a flat smile. A new bridge was made with larger more natural teeth to give a beautiful smile.
